5xMILLE

In Ethiopia, people are dying from climate change.

Ethiopia has had five consecutive failed rainy seasons. One of the most severely impacted areas is the Borena Region, in the Oromia Regional State, where more than 1 million people reside. The 91% of the population live in rural areas and depend on small-scale farming and breeding.

Five failed rainy seasons have caused a real natural disaster, decimated crops, and killed millions of livestock and left millions of people in need.

With no more water, crops yields and pastures dwindled week after week to almost nothing, until there was nothing left to eat for many small farmers and pastoralists. Countless families have fled their communities and are completely dependent on humanitarian aid.

Then, after almost three years of extensive drought, intense rainfall hit the region bringing a new threat. In fact extremely dry and hardened land are unable to absorb heavy precipitation and to hold water, increasing the risk of dangerous flash floods. Many people have lost their lives, homes, and animals.

Outbreaks of epidemic diseases, such as cholera are a major concern in drought affected areas.

According to data provided by OCHA - the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs - over 500,000 people have been forcibly displaced and have left the Borena in the last two years, escaping starvation and death.
