World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, promotes awareness and action for environmental protection. This year, CISP is thrilled to participate in this global event with a special occasion in Sarajevo, organized by our local colleagues and partners.
“Green Talks: Biodiversity and Environmental Policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina” is a day-long conference designed to facilitate in-depth discussions among policymakers, universities, international institutions, economic stakeholders, and civil society organizations. The conference will explore opportunities and methods for protecting natural resources and designated areas, in line with the EU Habitats Directive. Key topics include presenting recent local nature studies, identifying actionable steps to enhance biodiversity protection to meet EU standards, and providing an overview of available funding tools.
The event will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Sarajevo and will feature representatives from the Italian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, national ministries, cantonal public institutions, universities from Banja Luka, Sarajevo, Mostar, and Tuzla, UNDP, and several national parks such as Sutjeska, Blidinje, the protected natural areas of Sarajevo, Una National Park, Protected Landscape Konjuh, and Drina National Park. Additionally, representatives of the NaturBosniaHerzegovina project partnership will attend.

This event is part of a four-month festival organized as part of the concluding activities for NaturBosniaHerzegovina.
From April to July, the Sustainable Horizons Festival aims to celebrate Bosnia and Herzegovina’s environmental heritage with local communities, experts, and civil society organizations.
The festival’s activities include walking and biking tours in National Parks, educational and scientific events, round tables, capacity building meetings, and two major full-day events, labelled as “Green Talks”. The first of these events, “Charting Sustainable Tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” took place on May 8th. During this event, H.E. Marco Di Ruzza, the Italian Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, remarked:
It is my pleasure to take part in this event within the project NaturBosnaiHerzegovina. We will have the opportunity to celebrate together all the achievements that were the result of this project, in order to support the sustainability of tourism and the protection of the natural heritage of BiH, especially in relation to the two parks - Blidinje and Sutjeska, where the project was implemented and brilliantly managed by CISP and AICS, in order to protect the natural beauty, but also to improve the infrastructure for the future tourist economy and users of these parks. We call it the transfer of ecosystems like we have in Italy. I am very proud, because Italy, with its rich experience, has the opportunity to transfer to Bosnia and Herzegovina its experiences related to the development of sustainable tourism.
A video by Paolo Martino, introducing the experience of walking one of the new itineraries developed by the project, titled “Sutjeska: On the Path of History,” was also presented.

The NaturBosniaHerzegovina project focuses on protecting areas and promoting sustainable development in Bosnia and Herzegovina, continuing CISP's longstanding commitment to environmental protection, conscious resource use, and mitigating human impact on the planet. As an NGO dedicated to development, addressing these issues is crucial to preventing desertification, drought, biodiversity loss, and climate change impacts that cause hunger, inequality, and conflict globally.
In Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Balkans, CISP has specialized over the years in raising awareness about these issues and in the prevention and management of disasters, including those caused by floods and chronic droughts..
For decades, CISP's work on the responsible management of natural resources in national parks and other mountainous areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina highlights the multifaceted nature of our intervention, which encompasses environmental, social, and economic dimensions. A particular focus is on sustainable tourism, integral to promoting development models that consider the impact on natural resources and communities. Sustainable tourism serves as a tool for the socio-economic development of regions, enhancing their natural, historical, and cultural heritage. This approach fosters conscious growth, integrating fundamental values such as social equity, quality of life, cultural diversity, and environmental protection.
