A mother's journey of resilience
In Mukudhere Village, Somalia, Hawa's journey unfolds as a tale of resilience and hope. As a single mother of six, she faced numerous challenges, especially when her daughter, Salma, was diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition at just 18 months old. With Salma's weight at 4.5 KG and height at 68 cm, the stark reality of deprivation was evident, a plight not uncommon in the area.
In this setting, CISP conducts a Nutrition Project at the Shibis Health Centre, a beacon of hope funded by UNICEF. It was here that hope blossomed for Hawa and Salma. With systematic care and treatment, Salma's health took a positive turn. Through the lifeline provided by CISP's program, Salma's weight increased, and her overall health improved significantly.
Hawa's gratitude knows no bounds as she reflects on their transformative journey. "As a mother, I witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the nutrition program on my child's health and development. This will be my 5th visit to the centre. Thanks to CISP’s nutrition program, my child is thriving, and I couldn't be happier as a mother. The nutrition program gave me the knowledge to nourish my daughter and set her up for a lifetime of good health.
Timely nutrition supplies for children in Somalia
In Somalia, CISP's Nutrition Projects, backed by UNICEF and WFP, play a crucial role in ensuring mothers and infants have timely access to essential nutrition supplies. At Shibis Health Facility, streamlined services prioritize personalized care and prompt delivery of nutrition packages.
The journey commences at triage, where patient needs are assessed, and potential danger signs are monitored. Screening for malnutrition status guides appropriate referrals and admission to programs.
Mothers like Hawa express profound gratitude for the timely support in nutrition supplies, recognizing its significant impact on their children's growth and development. Through personalized processes and appointment reminders, mothers remain informed and engaged in their healthcare journey.
Community health workers serve as linchpins, bridging the gap between facilities and communities. Through home visits, education, and support, they ensure adherence to nutrition programs, fostering healthier outcomes for both mothers and infants.
Central to this effort is empowerment – empowering mothers to prioritize nutrition needs and cultivate nurturing environments for optimal health. Cooking demonstrations and training sessions underscore the importance of proper nutrition for children and other family members.
In the stories of Hawa, Salma, and countless other mothers and children, CISP's Nutrition Program in Somalia epitomizes not only a tale of overcoming challenges but one of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of dedication and commitment.
